Benny the Butcher’s Burden of Proof – Album Review

GRISELDA / EMPIRE

Unlike his fellow Griselda labelmates, Benny the Butcher took a reasonably sized gap between releasing solo projects, but finally, fans have been blessed with the long-awaited Burden of Proof. Though not his first project of the year, as he led Da Respected Sopranos with his Black Soprano Family imprint to showcase his independent label, this new album is our first taste of Benny’s solo work since the critically acclaimed The Plugs I Met, released in June 2019. To add on to the already growing hype behind the rapper’s latest release, elite producer Hit-boy was behind the boards for all twelve tracks after already having a stellar 2020 by executively producing Nas’s King’s Disease and making major contributions to other major albums like Big Sean’s Detroit 2

Gus Dapperton’s “Orca” – Album Review

Gus Dapperton continues to earn his place in the bedroom pop/indie scene with his 2020 sophomore full length Orca, a continuation to his 2019 full length LP debut Where Polly People Go to Read as well as to his single “Prune, You Talk Funny”  and feature “Somewhere.” Not shying away from making a whimsical pop album to both dance to and sulk to, Orca is the epitome of today’s online laptop-and-keyboard generation of music.

Dawes’ “Good Luck with Whatever” – Album Review

Last Friday, Dawes emerged from the shadow of 2018 with a new LP titled Good Luck with Whatever. I could feel something reminiscent about the title: it’s a message of all-inclusive goodwill, something Dawes has done before in similar fashion. Taylor Goldsmith, Dawes’ frontman, has already written about hoping all your favorite bands stay together (thankfully for me, this one did) and the bits of everything that explain why we feel what we feel. Just as nearly everything they’ve released accounts for universal messages, Good Luck with Whatever is a direct continuation of Dawes as we know them.

Joji’s “Nectar” – Album Review

Almost two years removed from his debut album, Joji has returned with his sophomore effort titled Nectar. In between projects, fans received little musical content from the artist as he only appeared on a handful of songs from his label’s compilation album, Head in the Clouds II. However, his album rollout started early in June of 2019, with his single “Sanctuary”, and carried on with three more singles, until his eighteen-track project was released at the tail end of September 2020.

Conway the Machine’s ‘From King To A GOD’ – Album Review

After already dropping two critically acclaimed albums in 2020, Conway the Machine is back with another classic album, From King To A GOD. The Griselda rapper shows no signs of slowing down as his fanbase is frequently being fed with top notch projects, a feat that most musicians would have a hard time pulling off. With that being said, it is probably safe to say that this is not going to be the last project out of Conway this year, as fans eagerly wait for his major label debut with Eminem’s Shady Records, titled God Don’t Make Mistakes.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Folklore’ – Album Review

I will never forgive any of you for convincing me Taylor Swift writes bad music. I saw Taylor Swift in concert when I was in high school. So consumed with the need to have “good taste,” the best compliment I gave her was that she was a great performer. Which, to be fair, was true! She is a great performer. But, she’s also a literary poet; she has a knack for writing music that cuts you to your core. This likely comes from being in an industry that is both infatuated with and contemptuous toward young women; but in Folklore, Swift reclaims her vulnerability without shame.
